Leptospirosis Situation in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of May 3, 2018.

Background

In Mayotte, cases of leptospirosis are reported year-round, but an increase is observed during the rainy season between January and May. Temperature and rainfall conditions during this period are conducive to the survival of leptospires—the bacteria responsible for the disease—in the environment. Locally, the primary identified reservoir for the bacteria is the rat. Leptospirosis surveillance in Mayotte relies on the reporting of all diagnoses confirmed by the laboratory at the Mayotte Hospital Center and transmitted to the ARS-OI’s Health Monitoring, Alert, and Management Unit. This epidemiological report presents leptospirosis surveillance data reported since the beginning of 2018 in Mayotte.
