Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of October 2, 2018.

Epidemiological Situation

Since the beginning of 2018, 6,604 biologically confirmed or probable cases of dengue (including 9 imported from Polynesia, Brazil, Thailand, the Maldives, and Myanmar) have been reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion. The only serotype identified in 2018 among indigenous cases is DENV-2 (911 genotypes identified). This situation follows an unusual, low-level viral circulation during 2017, when persistent transmission was observed during the southern winter.

In week S2018-38 (data from September 17 to 23):

  • 9 probable or confirmed cases of dengue were diagnosed through laboratory testing, based on the date of symptom onset

  • Confirmed and probable cases were located: - In the west: Le Guillaume (2 cases), La Saline (1 case), and La Possession (1 case); - In the south: Saint Louis (2 cases), Le Tampon (1 case), and Ravine des Cabris (1 case); - In the east: Saint André (1 case)

In week 37, based on the date of symptom onset, 10 locally acquired cases were reported.
