Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of June 5, 2014.
Key Points
Vector-borne diseases: Since May 1, 2014, the departments of Aude, Gard, Hérault, and Pyrénées-Orientales have been subject to enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue; to date, 15 reports of clinically suggestive cases of chikungunya have been received, 9 of which have been confirmed. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area: these are referred to as imported cases. To date, no indigenous cases have been reported in our region.
Hospital and medical activity in the region: There have been numerous calls and visits to SOS Médecins in Nîmes and Perpignan during this period; emergency room activity was also high last week, likely due to the long Ascension Day weekend.
Heatwave monitoring: The "seasonal watch" level of the National Heatwave Plan was activated on June 1, 2014. This bulletin includes a fact sheet on "heatwave risk monitoring," which will only appear if weather conditions warrant it.
