Epidemiological Surveillance in the Alsace Region. Update as of March 5, 2015.

Key Findings

  • In Alsace, according to available data, following an increase in all-cause mortality among people aged 75 and older in weeks 05 and 06, the weekly number of deaths across all age groups decreased: 290 in week 08 (versus 307 in week 07).

  • For the two SOS Médecins d'Alsace associations, activity related to influenza and influenza-like illnesses is decreasing and accounted for less than 20% of each association’s activity in week 09.

  • Since September 1, 2014, 305 respiratory specimens have tested positive for the influenza virus, including 153 in weeks 07 and 08.

  • There has been a continued occurrence of severe influenza cases requiring hospitalization in intensive care, with a total of 51 cases since November 2014, of which 5 have died.

  • In week 08 (February 16–22, 2015), 249 respiratory specimens were collected, and among the positive results, 98 were for influenza (39%).

  • For the two SOS Médecins associations in Alsace, the number of bronchiolitis diagnoses remains low. Bronchiolitis diagnoses accounted for less than 5% of these associations’ total activity in week 09.

  • Since Week 05, the weekly number of gastroenteritis and diarrhea diagnoses made by the Alsatian SOS Médecins associations has been relatively stable. Gastroenteritis and diarrhea diagnoses accounted for approximately 10% of the total activity of these associations in Week 09.

  • In week 08, 37 stool samples were collected, and among the positive results, 10 were positive for rotavirus (27%).
