Social CPS Worksheet: Resolving Conflicts Constructively (S2.2)
This fact sheet was prepared by Nadine Fréry and Béatrice Lamboy based on the CPS Volume 2 guidelines published by Santé publique France. It focuses on the second general psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of a specific psychosocial competency: Resolving conflicts constructively (S2.2). It refers to the ability to manage interpersonal difficulties constructively by fostering learning and proposing a favorable outcome for all parties involved. This competency involves mastering and knowing how to use various effective conflict resolution techniques depending on the context and the nature of the problems. To resolve conflicts constructively, it is necessary to calm down, observe, and analyze the conflict situation, and then—depending on the nature of the conflict—be able to implement the most appropriate strategy: a support strategy for Type 1 conflicts (where one person has unmet needs in the situation) and a negotiation strategy for Type 2 conflicts (where two people have conflicting needs). This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical segment, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
