Self-determination: Promoting the health of people with intellectual disabilities.
An analysis of the international scientific literature shows that the health status of people with intellectual disabilities is significantly worse than that of the general population. Furthermore, the limitations associated with this disability act as a barrier to accessing health services and health messages. This situation increases feelings of vulnerability, further widening social inequalities in health. This article proposes a framework for designing health promotion initiatives or programs for people with intellectual disabilities based on the concept of self-determination.
