Tuberculosis Control Activities Carried Out by Tuberculosis Control Centers: A Review of 2016 and Outlook.
Introduction: In France, tuberculosis control falls under the jurisdiction of the government and is coordinated through the Tuberculosis Control Centers (CLATs). An annual national survey conducted by the Directorate General for Health (DGS) evaluates the activities and performance of the CLATs. The objective of the study was to assess the activities of the CLATs in 2016 and certain trends observed since 2010. Materials and methods: In 2016, there were 100 CLATs in France, administrative entities comprising 162 physical tuberculosis control sites. The CLATs report on their work annually in an activity and performance report (RAP) defined by ministerial decree. The DGS conducts an annual online survey to collect activity and performance indicators. Results: Between 2010 and 2016, the number of RAPs received increased from 102 to 123. The number of consultations at CLATs rose from 80,684 to 141,881, and the number of investigations into active tuberculosis cases increased from 3,926 to 4,626. Of the 47,882 people screened for infection in 2016, 297 had active tuberculosis and 4,396 had latent tuberculosis infection (NNS [Number Needed to Screen] of 161 and 11, respectively). The 78,132 screenings conducted in 2016 outside of a census identified 265 active tuberculosis cases (NNS = 295). Conclusion: CLATs provide a high volume of specialized consultations and tuberculosis screenings. These results will contribute to discussions on improving the overall tuberculosis control system in France, in line with the objectives of the national health strategy.
