Health Surveillance in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Bulletin of July 2, 2025.

Key Points

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

  • Seven locally transmitted cases of chikungunya have already been identified in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region: 2 linked to the outbreak in La Crau in the Var department and 5 linked to the outbreak in Salon-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department.

  • The number and early onset of outbreaks across France confirm the very high risk of numerous areas with local transmission of chikungunya by 2025.

  • The first indigenous chikungunya outbreak in the Grand-Est region indicates a real risk in areas that have been free of the disease until now.

  • Since the start of enhanced surveillance (May 1), 124 imported cases (+16 since the last update) have been identified in the region: 64 cases of chikungunya, 59 cases of dengue, and 1 case of Zika.

Extreme heat, heat wave

  • A heatwave has been underway in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region since June 27. All departments are currently under an ORANGE heatwave alert, except for the Hautes-Alpes (YELLOW alert).

  • According to Météo France, temperatures could remain high near the Mediterranean in the coming days. The regional analysis of emergency care visits between June 27, 2025, and June 30, 2025, indicates an increase in activity for the iCanicule indicator at SOS Médecins (all ages) as well as in hospital emergency departments (all ages and those aged 75 and older).

Pollen exposure, which may pose an allergy risk

  • In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, the pollen index, established by Atmo France and accredited air quality monitoring associations, is at a moderate to high level, primarily due to grass pollen. Allergy-related activity at SOS Médecins locations is stable.
