Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of May 28, 2019.

Key Points

In S18 and S19, approximately 6,500 clinically suggestive cases were reported, bringing the total to approximately 35,000 since the beginning of the year.

The number of confirmed cases is declining (Weeks 18–19), ranging between 1,000 and 1,100 per week, bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the year to over 13,000.

However, all municipalities on the island remain affected by viral circulation.

Activity in the historic hotspots in the south continues to decline, except in St. Pierre (stable), which is now the largest hotspot.

The municipalities to monitor are St. Paul, La Possession, St. Denis, St. André, and in the south, St. Joseph, L’Entre-Deux, Le Tampon, and St. Philippe.

The DENV1 serotype continues to circulate among locally acquired cases in the south and north (19 cases identified).

Nine deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigations, five were considered directly linked to dengue and four indirectly linked.

Vigilance remains essential regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever).
