Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of March 5, 2019.
Epidemiological Situation
Epidemic trend: spreading, with 18 municipalities (out of 24) reporting cases.
Since the beginning of 2019, 1,189 locally acquired dengue cases have been reported (DENV2 serotype only), including 203 in week 07 and 221 in week 08. Since the start of the epidemic, 8,064 cases have been reported.
In weeks 07 and 08, 857 and 954 people, respectively, sought medical care for a clinically dengue-like syndrome, bringing the total to over 30,000 since 2018.
The most active outbreaks in weeks 07 and 08 are located in: - Saint Louis (94 cases) and Rivière Saint Louis (103 cases) - Les Avirons (42 cases), on the rise - Saint Pierre (35 cases) and Ravine des Cabris (24 cases), on the rise - Etang Salé (24 cases) and Piton Saint Leu (17 cases).
The distribution of cases is widespread; a slowdown in reporting is observed, particularly in Saint Louis and Rivière, likely linked to a decrease in requests for biological confirmation. Other indicators (estimates of clinically suggestive cases, emergency room visits, hospitalizations) continue to rise.
Biological confirmation of all suspected cases remains recommended in order to rapidly detect the emergence of new outbreaks.
