Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of April 16, 2019.
Key points
In weeks 13 and 14, more than 5,000 people (3,052 and 2,359, respectively) sought medical care for symptoms clinically suggestive of dengue, bringing the total to more than 16,000 since the beginning of the year and more than 43,000 since 2018.
More than 1,000 cases are currently being reported per week (1,090 and 952, respectively), bringing the number of reported cases since the start of the year to over 6,000 and to 14,000 cases since the start of the epidemic.
The spread of cases continues to be observed (23 municipalities have reported cases).
The "historical" outbreak in the south remains very active. Furthermore, the number of cases reported in St. Joseph, Le Tampon, and Les Avirons is increasing significantly.
Among emerging outbreaks, an increase in cases is observed in the municipalities of Cilaos, St. Philippe, Ste. Suzanne, St. André, St. Denis, and St. Paul
Local transmission of the DENV1 serotype has been detected in Petite Ile (14 cases)
Six deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigations, three were considered directly linked to dengue and three indirectly linked.
