Mass foodborne illness outbreak at soccer training centers On Friday, February 14, 2014, the on-call team at the Midi-Pyrénées Regional Health Agency (ARS) was contacted by the Haute-Garonne Prefecture regarding a suspected foodborne illness outbreak at a soccer training center in the Toulouse area. During the night of February 13–14, 20 people were treated by the SAMU for various gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, nausea, diarrhea), and three of them were transferred by the SAMU to the emergency department of the Toulouse University Hospital. All of the patients had attended a group dinner on February 13. An initial investigation conducted by the ARS revealed that the affected trainees had also attended a lunch on February 12 at another training center in the Montpellier region with other soccer teams (165 people), among whom at least 20 other patients with identical symptoms had been identified. The ARS and Cire agencies in both regions (Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon) conducted joint investigations to characterize the outbreak, confirm the hypothesis of a link to the February 12 meal, and implement appropriate management measures to prevent any risk of further spread or recurrence. At the conclusion of the investigations, 48 patients who had attended the meal on February 12 were identified, and the attack rate among those who attended the lunch on February 12 was estimated at 51% (i.e., half of the participants in that meal). These initial results would confirm the hypothesis of a viral outbreak (calicivirus, norovirus) linked to participation in the gathering in Montpellier.
