Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of December 19, 2013.

Key development: Episodes of particulate matter air pollution in several regions of France

In recent weeks, several regions in France have experienced episodes of particulate matter air pollution linked both to certain air emissions (road traffic, heating, etc.) and to meteorological conditions (high-pressure systems and low temperatures) that did not facilitate the dispersion of pollutants. As a result, atmospheric particulate matter concentrations exceeded information and alert thresholds in a large number of metropolitan areas, including certain cities in Midi-Pyrénées. These pollution episodes can trigger the onset or worsening of various symptoms (allergies, asthma, respiratory tract irritation, cardiopulmonary effects, etc.), particularly among the most vulnerable populations such as infants and young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with asthma or cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. Particulate matter in the air we breathe has also been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a known human carcinogen (October 1, 2002).

The main recommendations to follow during these pollution episodes were developed by the High Council for Public Health (HCSP) and reiterated by the Ministry of Health on December 13: For vulnerable and sensitive populations: avoid intense physical and sports activities; consult a doctor or pharmacist in case of unusual respiratory or cardiac discomfort. consult your doctor to determine if your treatment needs to be adjusted; opt for shorter outings than usual if symptoms are less bothersome indoors; avoid going out early in the morning and late in the day, and near major roadways; postpone activities that require the most effort. - For the general public: Reduce and postpone intense physical and sports activities, whether outdoors or indoors, until the end of the episode. If symptoms are experienced (unusual fatigue, sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, palpitations), consult your doctor or pharmacist.
