Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of October 2, 2015.

Key Points

Vector-borne diseases: The period of enhanced surveillance for dengue and chikungunya cases extends through November 30, the date on which the tiger mosquito is expected to begin its diapause. To date, 198 suspected cases have been investigated, among which 11 imported dengue cases have been confirmed, as well as 2 imported chikungunya cases. Regarding the cluster of locally acquired dengue cases in Nîmes, the total remains at 6 confirmed cases and 1 probable case (which cannot be biologically confirmed).

Hospital and medical activity in the region: activity by SOS Médecins associations is slightly higher than in the previous two years.

Syndromic clusters monitored (Oscour and SOS Médecins data):- As is typical for this time of year, emergency room visits for asthma have increased and remain higher than what was observed during the same period in the previous two years. Fourteen hospitalizations were recorded for this reason in week 2015-39. - The first diagnoses of bronchiolitis were recorded in both hospitals and community settings, which is typical for this time of year. At the same time, there has been an increase in visits to emergency departments and calls to SOS Médecins regarding bronchitis. - Visits to emergency departments for pneumonia increased by 38% between weeks 38 and 39 of 2015; 58% of these cases were hospitalized, and 44% were aged 75 or older.
