Epidemiological Survey on Sports Doping in Schools in the Midi-Pyrénées Region in 1999: Preliminary Results
Sports doping is defined as the use of substances or methods intended to artificially enhance performance during a competition or in preparation for one. ... While it is now widely accepted that doping affects all forms of sports, the most alarming aspect of the phenomenon appears to be its spread and normalization among young athletes. ... A survey on doping conducted in 1991 among students in the Toulouse school district had helped to objectively confirm the existence of the problem in this population. Given recent trends in doping among young athletes, we decided to conduct a new survey on this topic in 1999. This second survey, conducted in collaboration with the school health services, sports medicine services, and the Department of Epidemiology in Toulouse, aims to observe the evolution of the phenomenon, identify the factors associated with the temptation to dope, and study the perceptions of sports and doping that are linked to it. This article presents preliminary descriptive results regarding the reported use of doping substances in the context of sports participation, as well as the temptation to engage in such behavior among French adolescents in 1999. These data are compared with those from the 1991 survey, which was conducted using a similar methodology. (R.A.)
