COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of July 22, 2021
Key Points
In Week 28 (July 12–18, 2021), epidemiological indicators pointed to a continued deterioration of the situation, with an increase in SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the Île-de-France region. The rise in case numbers occurred against a backdrop of a sharp increase in the detection of the Delta variant and a decline in public adherence to preventive measures.
In Île-de-France, the regional incidence rate for week 28 rose for the third consecutive week, reaching 97 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The testing rate remained stable and therefore did not account for the rise in incidence. The positivity rate, rising for the second consecutive week, also indicated increased viral circulation in the region.
In Week 28, the number of reported new hospitalizations increased for the second consecutive week and was accompanied by a rise in the number of admissions to intensive care units—the first increase after 14 weeks of decline. In contrast, the number of reported deaths in hospitals among COVID-19 patients continued to decline in Week 28.
As of July 20, 55.9% of the population in the Île-de-France region had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 45.8% were fully vaccinated. Although the increase in vaccination coverage was significant among people under 50, it remained very low among older adults. Against the backdrop of a resurgence of the epidemic, widespread transmission of the Delta variant, and summer vacations, vaccination of all eligible individuals must be strongly encouraged with the goal of achieving a sufficient level of herd immunity as quickly as possible and protecting the most vulnerable. Indeed, it is important to remember that vaccination does not guarantee immune protection, particularly among the elderly.
It is also essential to maintain a high level of adherence to preventive measures, particularly the observance of barrier measures, limiting high-risk contacts, and self-isolation in the event of symptoms, a confirmed infection, or contact with a confirmed case.
