Public Health Surveillance in the Grand Est Region. Epidemiological Update as of June 15, 2017.

Key Points

Enhanced Surveillance for Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika

  • In mainland France, Aedes albopictus, known as the "tiger mosquito," is established in 33 departments. In 2017, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin were classified as Level 1 departments under the plan to prevent the spread of chikungunya and dengue in mainland France, due to the mosquito vector’s long-term presence. These departments are part of the enhanced surveillance system for chikungunya, dengue, and Zika in mainland France, which is active from May 1 to November 30 each year.

  • Between May 1 and June 9, 2017, one imported case of chikungunya was confirmed in the Bas-Rhin.

Asthma Surveillance

  • The proportion of asthma diagnoses in emergency department activity has decreased significantly compared to the previous week (week 23).

  • For the SOS Médecins associations in the region, asthma-related activity is slightly lower than the levels typically observed at this time of year.

Allergy surveillance

  • Following the peak in activity observed in week 21, allergy-related activity has been decreasing among SOS Médecins associations over the past two weeks.

  • According to the pollen and allergy bulletin, the allergy risk is very high for grass pollen across all departments in the Grand Est region.

Heat waves and high temperatures

  • The Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS) has been operational since June 1, 2017.

Mortality monitoring

  • As of June 15, 2017, the number of deaths observed over the past few weeks falls within the usual range of fluctuations.
