COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Grand Est Region as of February 25, 2021

Key Points

New SARS-CoV-2 Infections

In week 07-2021, after two weeks of decline, the number of new cases rose slightly again (10,210 new cases compared to 9,751 in week 06-2021). The number of people tested is increasing (220,227 people this week compared to 195,188 in week 06-2021), with a rise in testing activity among younger age groups. The incidence rate is rising (185.2 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 176.9 in week 06-2021) but remains below the national incidence rate (207 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants). In week 07-2021, the positivity rate (4.6%) continues to decline (5% in week 06-2021).

The epidemic situation remains a cause for concern in week 07-2021, with viral circulation well above the threshold for active virus circulation (set at 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Viral circulation is high across all age groups, ranging from 91 per 100,000 among those aged 0–9 to 266 per 100,000 among those aged 20–29 and 281 among those aged 90 and older. Two-thirds (66.1%) of new cases tested in week 07-2021 are under 50 years of age (31.2% are between 20 and 39 years old) and are therefore, in principle, at low risk of severe disease.

In week 07-2021, viral circulation is on the rise in six departments in the region: the Ardennes (115.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the Marne (159.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haute-Marne (164.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meurthe-et-Moselle (208.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Moselle (310.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Bas-Rhin (167 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). It is declining in Aube (183 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meuse (122.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haut-Rhin (117 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Vosges (114 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The situation remains concerning in Moselle, as, in addition to having the highest incidence rate in the region, there is significant circulation of variants of interest. In seven departments, viral circulation is at levels similar to those observed in early December, if not lower.
