Public Health Bulletin on Tobacco in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. February 2021.
Key Points
With 9,822 people registered for Smoke-Free Month 2018—representing 1.8% of daily smokers—the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region accounted for 4.1% of registrants in metropolitan France. A 56% increase in registrations was observed compared to 2017, partly due to the introduction of appointments with a 3989 telephone counselor.
A 69% increase in the number of calls to 3989 (the Tabac Info Service hotline) and a 6% increase in the number of activations of the Tabac Info Service app were observed between 2017 and 2018.
A 6.1% decrease in the number of smoking cessation kits ordered was observed between 2017 and 2018. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 455 of the region’s 969 pharmacies participated in the 2018 Smoke-Free Month campaign, representing 47% coverage compared to 84% in metropolitan France.
Among daily smokers in 2017, the average consumption of manufactured cigarettes was 8.8 [7.4–10.3] cigarettes per day and 5.0 [3.8–6.2] hand-rolled cigarettes per day, figures equivalent to those for metropolitan France.
For the year 2015, an estimated 3,758 deaths were attributable to smoking (95% confidence interval: 3,647–3,924), representing 12.7% of all-cause deaths. This proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was 6.2% for women and 19.3% for men. Chronic respiratory diseases and cancers account for the largest share of deaths attributable to smoking: 28% and 13% among women, and 46% and 40% among men, in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
