Health Risks of PCBs in Freshwater FishSince 2006, several fishing restrictions and recommendations against consuming fish species that accumulate the highest levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)—such as eels, fatty fish, and species known to be highly bioaccumulative—have been implemented. Recommendations¹ have proposed a threshold of 700 ng of total PCBs per gram of plasma lipids for the at-risk population—comprising pregnant women, women of childbearing age, breastfeeding women, and children under three years of age—and 1,800 ng/g for the rest of the population.
