Assessment of dietary frequency among a population of immigrants who have settled in the Paris region.
Introduction: When moving to a new country, migrants must re-establish certain fundamental reference points. This adjustment can lead to the development of dietary habits that are less conducive to good health. The objective of the study was to describe the dietary behaviors of a population of immigrants surveyed during their visit to the French Office for Immigration and Integration (OFII), and to examine the relationship between these dietary habits and the length of residence in France. Methods: Immigrants visited the OFII to sign a Reception and Integration Contract (CAI). The study was offered by the interviewer to those proficient in spoken and written French. Participants received a short questionnaire asking about consumption frequencies for 11 food groups. To examine the relationship between these consumption patterns and length of residence, analyses adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics were conducted. Results: The study sample consisted of 723 participants. Among them, 33.4% consumed at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Only 13.3% consumed three dairy products daily. Furthermore, 66.3% consumed seafood at least twice a week. More than a quarter (28.0%) consumed sugary drinks daily, and half consumed sugary products (48.7%) or fatty and salty products (47.0%) every day. There was no statistically significant association between consumption by food group and length of residence in France. Conclusion: the dietary habits of the immigrant population exhibit certain specific characteristics compared to those of the general population, requiring tailored prevention messages.
