Vaccination Week (VW) was established in 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is now observed in nearly 200 countries around the world. It is a key opportunity for outreach and action targeting the public and healthcare professionals to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and to remind everyone that vaccination is a major public health issue. "Against many serious diseases: vaccination is the best protection." By raising awareness of the importance of vaccination, the activities carried out as part of European Immunization Week aim to increase vaccination coverage.

The WHO has declared 2020 the “Year of the Nurse and the Midwife” and decided to highlight the benefits of vaccination against measles, HPV, rubella, hepatitis B, and polio.
In France, the event is coordinated at the national level by the Ministry of Health and Santé publique France, and managed regionally by the Regional Health Agencies. The overall objective of European Immunization Week is to explicitly promote the effectiveness of vaccination at all stages of life by reminding the public that vaccination is the best protection against certain infectious diseases, and that it is important to check one’s vaccination status and get vaccinated.
Public Health supports this initiative and provides numerous resources (a simplified vaccination schedule, posters, and brochures produced in versions accessible to all and translated into several languages).
