Occupational Health and Safety: A Key Focus of Santé publique France’s Work

Occupational health and safety is a key focus area for Santé publique France and falls under the broader theme of “Environmental Health, Climate Change, and Working Conditions.” This broad scope allows for a cross-cutting and comprehensive approach to risks associated with climate change and the impacts of chemical substances, as well as enabling strategies tailored to specific “environmental” settings.

To gain a comprehensive view of occupational health, Santé publique France relies on the following mechanisms:

  • Epidemiological surveillance of the working population, notably through general and specialized cohorts, as well as through surveillance systems based on occupational health and prevention services;

  • Surveillance of occupational exposures and worker exposure levels, notably through job-exposure matrices, culture-exposure matrices, or the national biomonitoring program;

  • Surveillance of specific conditions (mesothelioma, other cancers, musculoskeletal disorders, chronic respiratory diseases, mental health disorders, neurodegenerative diseases);

  • Epidemiological investigations aimed at addressing reports of unusual health events in the workplace (suspected clusters of disease cases, unexplained collective syndromes, atypical exposures, etc.).

The Agency also develops workplace health promotion initiatives through numerous partnerships, with the aim of promoting health-promoting behaviors.

Santé publique France carries out all of its activities in the field of occupational health in collaboration with other stakeholders in the field, such as the Occupational Risks Directorate of the CNAM, the INRS, the MSA, and the French Society of Occupational Medicine. Collaborations with research teams also foster strong and significant partnerships, enabling a robust link between research and surveillance activities to improve the prevention of occupational risks.

The field of occupational health is complex, involving many stakeholders whose actions must be coordinated and consistent. The need has arisen to modernize surveillance systems that contribute to improving our understanding of the field. Santé publique France is actively involved in this effort by facilitating dialogue among relevant institutions and with various partners. The COVID-19 health crisis has highlighted the critical challenges facing occupational health. Our priorities are to assess the impact of work on health—both in terms of diseases and risk factors—and to provide decision-makers and occupational health professionals with the knowledge and tools essential for taking action in the workplace. Employers can also play a decisive role in the health of their employees, which is why the Agency has created the “Employers for Health” platform, providing them with tailored tools to implement a policy of prevention and health promotion within their organizations,” explains Prof. Géneviève Chêne, Director General of Santé publique France
