Recent trends in data on long-term conditions (ALD): implications for national surveillance of cancer incidence, 1997–2009, France.

Introduction - This study presents national trends in the admission rate for long-term illnesses (ALD) from 1997 to 2009 for 24 types of cancer. Its objective was to compare trends in admission rates (ALD rates) with national incidence rates over the 1997–2006 period and to identify recent breaks in trends in ALD rates. Materials and Methods - Trends in ALD rates are presented from 1997 to 2009. They are graphically compared with those of the estimated national incidence rate, derived from modeling based on observed data through 2006 and a projection model extending through 2011. Results - Over the 1997–2006 period, trends in the ALD rate and the modeled incidence rate were relatively similar, except for bladder cancer and, in men, laryngeal cancer. ALD rates showed breaks in trend starting in the mid-2000s for breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers, following several years of sustained growth. Conclusion - Trends in ALD rates should be interpreted with caution, as they may be influenced by regulatory changes or shifts in the frequency of ALD applications among individuals diagnosed with a new cancer. However, these data are readily available and, as such, highly useful for national cancer incidence surveillance. They enable the timely identification of breaks in trends, as illustrated for breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers. For breast and prostate cancers, the trends are consistent with epidemiological knowledge and international data. For thyroid cancer, international data did not allow for this trend to be anticipated. (R.A.)
