  • Among mothers of children aged 5 or younger in 2021, 24% were smoking when they found out they were pregnant.

  • Among these women who were smoking when they found out they were pregnant in 2021, 45% reported quitting smoking as soon as they found out they were pregnant or during their pregnancy, 51% reported reducing the amount they smoked without quitting entirely, and 4% neither quit nor reduced their smoking.

  • Among all mothers of children aged 5 or younger in 2021, 13% reported having smoked throughout their entire pregnancy.

  • Among mothers of children aged 5 or younger in 2021, 93% reported never having drunk alcohol during their most recent pregnancy after learning they were pregnant, and 6% reported drinking only on special occasions. Less than 1% reported drinking alcohol more than once a month.
