Prevalence of smoking and vaping in mainland France in 2022 among adults aged 18–75
Introduction – Following an unprecedented decline in smoking prevalence in France between 2016 and 2019, the rate has since stabilized. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the primary objective of this study is to estimate smoking prevalence in 2022 and to describe recent trends. Methods – The data used come from a telephone survey of a random sample, conducted between March and July 2022, comprising a total of 3,229 individuals aged 18–75 residing in metropolitan France. Results – In 2022, in metropolitan France, more than three out of ten people aged 18–75 reported smoking (31.8%), and one-quarter reported smoking daily (24.5%). These prevalence rates have remained stable compared to 2021 and since 2019. The prevalence of daily smoking remains higher among men (27.4% vs. 21.7% among women). A 14-point gap is observed between individuals with no diploma or a diploma below the high school diploma (30.8%) and those with a diploma above the high school diploma (16.8%). In 2022, 7.3% of 18- to 75-year-olds reported vaping, with 5.5% doing so daily. These prevalence rates are higher than in 2019. Conclusion – The stability in smoking prevalence observed since the COVID-19 crisis continues into 2022. Social inequalities regarding smoking remain very pronounced, and reducing them will be a major challenge for the third tobacco control plan, which begins in 2023.
