Key Points

  • In Week 11 (March 13–19, 2023), the second week following the start of the school year, emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits increased among children (+9% and +7%, or +7,924 visits and +871 hospitalizations) and remained stable among adults.

  • In connection with the start of the school year, a continued increase in several indicators was observed this week among children, most notably among 2- to 14-year-olds for asthma (+35%, or +392 visits), trauma (+13%, or +2,867 visits), and ENT conditions (+11%, or +636 visits). After a slight resurgence among 2- to 14-year-olds in Week 10, influenza remained stable in Week 11 and continued to decline in other age groups. Visits for suspected COVID-19, however, continued to rise, both among children (+50%, or +78 visits) and adults (+17%, or +245 visits), with a total of 1,899 visits across all ages in Week 11 versus 1,576 in Week 10.

  • Across all age groups, visits for conjunctivitis and scarlet fever remained at high levels and continued to rise (up 9%, or 105 visits across all ages, and up 20%, or 47 visits, among 2- to 14-year-olds).

  • Finally, regarding mental health, there was a continued increase in suicidal acts among those under 15 and those 65 and older (+7% and +11%, or +11 and +14 visits, respectively), at levels close to those of 2022.
