Antibiotic Use in the Private Sector in France, 2012–2022
In urban areas, while antibiotic consumption has generally been on a downward trend since 2012, it increased in 2022 at a faster rate than in 2021; however, it remains slightly below the level observed in 2019. Expressed as the number of DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants per day, this consumption was 21.6 DDDs/1,000 inhabitants/day in 2022 (+14.0% compared to 2021). Expressed as the number of prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, it stood at 821.5 presc./1,000 inh/yr in 2022 (+16.6% compared to 2021). In nursing homes without an in-house pharmacy (PUI), antibiotic consumption and prescriptions increased in 2022, whereas they had been decreasing from 2015 to 2021. They stood at 40.5/DDJ/1,000 Jheb (days of care) (+11.4% compared to 2021) and 4.07 prescriptions/1,000 Jheb (+10.5% compared to 2021), which is also slightly lower than the level observed in 2019.
