Leptospirosis Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of February 11, 2016.

Summary

Despite high rainfall during the 2015 southern summer and numerous episodes of heavy rain, some of which were followed by flooding, the number of leptospirosis cases in Réunion in 2015 decreased by one-third compared to previous years. Agricultural, recreational, or occupational activities and activities in freshwater are the main sources of infection.Simply applying personal protective measures during gardening activities (wearing boots, gloves, and long clothing) could significantly reduce the incidence of leptospirosis in Réunion and prevent deaths.
