Leading Causes of Death in Réunion. 2023 Report.

  • In 2023, 5,509 deaths were recorded among residents of Réunion, representing a standardized rate of 840 per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • The all-cause mortality rate decreased by 171 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023 compared to 2022 on the island.

  • Male mortality remained higher than female mortality in 2023 (standardized mortality rate of 1,060 per 100,000 men versus 672 deaths per 100,000 women).

  • Cancers and circulatory system diseases: the two leading causes of death on the island in 2023. While mortality from cancers is on the rise compared to 2022, mortality from circulatory system diseases shows a downward trend.

  • Respiratory diseases were the third leading cause of death among men, while for women, it was endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases.

  • The mortality rate among those under 65 fell below the threshold of 200 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (190) for the first time since 2018.

  • Among those under 65, external causes of morbidity and mortality remained the second leading cause of death after tumors.

  • There was a sharp decline in Covid-19 mortality, with the disease becoming the 9th leading cause of death in 2023.
