Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and non-irritating gas produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials, most often due to poor ventilation combined with malfunctioning heating or hot water systems, or the improper use of internal combustion engines. Inhalation of CO, followed by its entry into the bloodstream, blocks the transport of oxygen to the tissues, which can lead to death within minutes. Despite the measures implemented to reduce the effects of this toxic gas on humans and the progress observed in terms of reduced mortality, CO poisoning is responsible each year in France for about a hundred deaths and several thousand medical treatments, a finding that illustrates its health and economic impacts.
