Key Points

  • In 2018, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, 9,558 daily smokers registered for Mois Sans Tabac, representing 4.0% of registrations for this national campaign and 2.0% of daily smokers in the region (France=1.9%). Nearly three-quarters of registrants were between the ages of 15 and 44 (72.5%). During the campaign, the number of calls to the Tabac Info Service hotline from residents of the region was 467, or 3.9% of calls recorded in France. This figure represented a 44% increase compared to 2017.

  • In 2018, the Mutualité Française Centre-Val de Loire, the regional ambassador, recorded 159 initiatives in the region, representing a 148.4% increase compared to 2016. Among these, several initiatives were carried out during the “Mois Sans Tabac” campaign

  • In 2017, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, among daily smokers, the average consumption of manufactured cigarettes was 8.5 cigarettes per day and that of hand-rolled cigarettes was 4.1, figures comparable to those of metropolitan France (8.4 and 4.4, respectively). The prevalence of hookah use was 2.5% (mainland France = 2.3%). In the Centre-Val de Loire region in 2018, the share of cigarettes purchased in a neighboring country was 9.5%, below the rate for mainland France (16.4%) but still high for a non-border region.

  • In the Centre-Val de Loire region in 2015, the proportion of deaths attributable to smoking among women was 5.6% (France: 6.9%). Among men, the proportion of deaths attributable to smoking was 18.0% (France: 19.3%). Cancer (Men=66.4%; Women=52.0%), cardiovascular diseases (Men=22.3%; Women=26.8%), and chronic respiratory diseases (Men=11.6%; Women=17.0%) are the most common causes of death. Furthermore, 25% of deaths were attributed to smoking before the age of 65, compared to 9% after age 65.
