For the past five consecutive weeks (beginning in calendar week 49 of 2012), an outbreak of gastroenteritis has been ongoing in Martinique. Since the outbreak began, the estimated number of cases is approximately 6,000.
REMINDER: To limit the spread of the viruses causing this outbreak, it is essential to follow basic hygiene rules, particularly regular handwashing with soap. Parents are reminded that if their children (especially the youngest ones) show symptoms of gastroenteritis (diarrhea, vomiting), they should consult their primary care physician to prevent dehydration, which can be severe in infants.
