Health Surveillance in Normandy. Bulletin dated September 3, 2026.

Key Points

Heat and Health

A heat wave affected Normandy from August 11 to 17, 2026. The trends in heat-related indicators during this period were the subject of a dedicated weekly bulletin.

Visits to emergency rooms and calls to SOS Médecins for iCanicule (hyperthermia/heatstroke, hyponatremia, dehydration) increased slightly during this heat wave, though they remained close to the levels typically observed during the summer season outside of heat waves.

Arboviral Diseases

Since the start of enhanced surveillance (May 1), several people residing in the region who had traveled to an endemic area have contracted an arbovirus; these cases were reported as imported cases. These include 16 cases of dengue and 2 cases of chikungunya, one of which occurred in August. No locally transmitted cases have been detected in Normandy.

Back-to-School Asthma

Every year, starting in the first week of the new school year, an increase in asthma attacks among children is observed, leading to increased healthcare utilization. Several factors may explain this phenomenon, including the discontinuation of their maintenance therapy during summer vacation.

All-Cause Mortality

In August, mortality rates remained within the usual range of fluctuation.
