Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of May 21, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks, consistent with levels typically observed during the inter-epidemic period.

Chikungunya

  • Since the detection of the first confirmed case of chikungunya in late January, 419 cases have been biologically confirmed in French Guiana, including 316 in the Western Coast sector (75%), where the epidemic is ongoing. The circulation of the virus appears to be intensifying across the territory, particularly in the Savanes and Cayenne Island sectors, which are in the epidemic outbreak phase, and in the Maroni sector, which remains, however, in the sporadic transmission phase. The Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors remain under epidemiological surveillance.
  • The Western Coast is at the “alert level” under the ORSEC plan for combating arboviruses.

Malaria

The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was moderate and on the rise over the past two weeks, with 16 cases recorded (12 in Week 19 and 4 in Week 20) compared to a total of 4 in Weeks 17 and 18. Of these 16 cases, all were caused by P. vivax (including 3 relapses), except for 1 caused by P. malariae. Since the beginning of the year, 116 cases of malaria have been reported, including 16 in March, 15 in April, and 16 in May. Over the past three months, infections have occurred primarily in gold mining areas in the Savanes sector.

Acute respiratory infections

  • Bronchiolitis: Over the past two weeks, a marked increase in bronchiolitis-related activity has been observed in primary care centers (CDPS), local hospitals, and the emergency departments of the three university hospital sites, with an increasing detection of RSV in biological samples. A pre-epidemic phase has therefore been declared, to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
  • Flu-like illness & COVID-19: Activity related to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 was low.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea-related activity remained high over the past two weeks in primary care clinics and emergency departments at the three university hospital sites.
