Chikungunya in French Guiana. Bulletin of May 28, 2026.

Key Points

Since late January (Week 04), 513 cases of chikungunya have been laboratory-confirmed in French Guiana, including 74 in Week 21 (data incomplete due to a data reception issue at one laboratory). The virus is circulating more intensively and spreading across the territory:

  • Western Coast: The epidemic continues; confirmed cases and emergency room visits for suspected chikungunya remain at a high level, though slightly lower in S21. The Western Coast is at the “alert level” under the ORSEC plan for combating arboviruses.
  • Savannas: A fourth epidemic outbreak has been detected in this sector, which has been in the outbreak phase since Week 19.
  • Cayenne Island: The trend in the number of cases cannot be confirmed in Week 21 because virological data submissions are incomplete for this sector; the sector has been in the epidemic outbreak phase since Week 18.
  • Maroni: Cases continue to be confirmed there, and consultations for chikungunya at health centers are being recorded; the area remains in the sporadic transmission phase.
