Key Points

Extreme Heat, Heat Wave

  • Between Thursday, May 21, and Saturday, May 30, France experienced a prolonged and intense heat wave for the month of May. This prompted the early activation of the national heat wave plan.
    • In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the departments of Drôme, Isère, and Rhône were placed under a yellow heat wave alert between May 26 and 31 (week 22).
  • A second heat wave hit France in mid-June. This heat wave was described as early, intense, and prolonged.
    • In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the heatwave began on June 18 and ended on the morning of June 29. Three departments (Allier, Puy-de-Dôme, and Loire) were placed under a red heatwave alert for 4 to 7 days. The region’s nine other departments (Ain, Ardèche, Cantal, Drôme, Isère, Haute-Loire, Rhône, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie) were placed under an orange alert.
    • Between June 18 and 28, 2026 (S25 and S26), nearly 1,100 emergency room visits (51% of which resulted in hospitalization), with a peak of 191 visits on June 27, 2026, and 265 SOS Médecins calls—peaking at 35 on June 24, 2026—were recorded due to the heat wave. The age groups most affected were people aged 75 and older (48% of emergency department visits and 42% of SOS Médecins calls), followed by people aged 15 to 74 (42% and 40%, respectively).
    • Emergency room visits were primarily due to hyperthermia (44%) or dehydration (36%). SOS Médecins calls related to heat waves were mostly for heatstroke (61%).
    • These trends were characterized by very high fluctuations and reached exceptional levels.
