COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for March 24, 2022

Key Points

In Week 11, the spread of SARS-CoV-2 continued across the country, while new hospitalizations across all departments remained stable.

  • Mainland France:

    • Incidence rates rising across all age groups, particularly among the elderly

    • Very high and rising positivity rate

    • Admissions to intensive care and number of deaths decreasing

  • Overseas territories:

    • Incidence rate remains high in Martinique (>1,000/100,000) though falling sharply

    • High incidence rate in Réunion (>1,000) and slightly rising

Variants

  • Omicron accounted for more than 99.9% of interpretable sequences in the Flash S10 survey of March 7

  • BA.2 sublineage is predominant (73% in S10)

Contact tracing

  • Increase in the number of new cases (+38%) and at-risk contacts (+24%)

  • Increase in cases visiting public places following the lifting of public health measures, creating conditions conducive to virus transmission

Prevention

  • Vaccination as of March 21, 2022 (Covid Vaccine data):

    • 79.4% of the total population had received a full primary vaccination series

    • 73.1% of those aged 18 and older had received a booster dose, and 83.1% of those aged 65 and older

  • Importance of combined measures:

    • Complete vaccination series with a booster dose, including a second dose for eligible individuals, particularly those aged 80 and older, nursing home residents, and immunocompromised individuals

    • Continuation of preventive measures, including mask-wearing—especially in enclosed spaces or in the presence of vulnerable individuals—handwashing, and frequent ventilation of enclosed spaces
