The objectives of the survey are to examine general practitioners’ attitudes toward screening for the hepatitis C virus and to estimate the number of known infected patients among their patients. Seventy percent of general practitioners ordered at least one anti-HCV serology test during 1994. Nearly three out of four general practitioners know of at least one HCV-positive patient among their patients. The number of HCV-positive patients known to their general practitioner in 1994 is estimated at approximately 100,000. A large number of people infected with the hepatitis C virus (approximately 75 to 80%) are still unaware of their status and fall outside the healthcare system. (adapted from the text).
