Surveillance of blood-exposure incidents in French healthcare facilities. AES-Raisin Network, France. 2015 Results
Background: Blood-borne incidents (BBIs) are a major occupational hazard for healthcare professionals (HCPs). Objective: To monitor BBIs in French healthcare facilities (HCFs). Methods: Participation by HCFs is voluntary. BBIs are documented using a standardized questionnaire. Results: In 2015, 14,624 BES were documented in 825 HC. The overall incidence of BES was 5.7 per 100 beds. This decreased by 23.0% overall and by 23.8% in the stable 2008–2015 cohort (n = 231 HC). Percutaneous AEs (n=11,476) were the most common cause of reported AEs, primarily associated with needle sticks (n=9,703), half of which were related to needle handling (48.4%). Within the stable cohort, the proper use of gloves increased from 68.5% in 2008 to 76.9% in 2015. In contrast, the availability of sharps containers remained stable: 70.4% in 2008 to 72.0% in 2015. In 2015, 31.9% of needlestick injuries were preventable through adherence to standard precautions. Within the stable 2008–2015 cohort, a significant decrease in the proportion of preventable needlestick injuries was observed (from 39.9% in 2008 to 31.9% in 2015). Conclusions: The 2015 report concludes the national analysis of data collected through this network since 2002. The results show a steady decrease in adverse events and suggest that the safety of healthcare practice has improved significantly in recent years. Beyond these very positive results, this surveillance has provided a better understanding of adverse events, an essential step in guiding prevention strategies. Thus, even though this surveillance is no longer a priority at the national level, it remains so within healthcare institutions, where all prevention efforts must be continued.
