Suicide: How Do We Talk About It? The Papageno Program.

Paradoxically, sweeping suicide under the rug hinders any possibility of prevention. The right words to discuss suicide or a suicide attempt do exist, in the form of reporting that is respectful of the person’s suffering. This is the exact opposite of highly publicized, “sensationalist,” glamorized coverage of suicide that details the method used, which can contribute to suicide contagion. When reporting meets certain criteria, it can even help prevent suicidal behavior. Based on this scientifically established protective effect, the Papageno program aims to educate media and news professionals on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
