Social engagement: good for older adults’ health, but not without its inequalities.

To what extent is the aging process influenced by people’s participation in community life? A Canadian literature review highlights a strong correlation between optimal health and social participation. Such participation can, in particular, help slow cognitive and functional decline. Despite the opportunities offered by participation, it should not be turned into a requirement, bearing in mind that it primarily benefits the most affluent seniors. In the future, the real question will be how to ensure that it benefits all seniors.
