Research project with a group of young inmates.

Since 1987, health education and promotion initiatives have been carried out in various institutions across the Aquitaine region by the Aquitaine Regional Committee for Health Education (C.R.A.E.S.), in collaboration with the Bordeaux Regional Directorate of Correctional Services. The research project presented here takes a holistic approach to health, and its methodology is based on the “sociological intervention” model, which involves two groups working in parallel. One group, composed of young volunteers, participates in meetings on health in detention, perceptions of health, and risky behaviors; the other consists of staff members. A joint meeting concluded the action phase. This method facilitates the expression of experiences of incarceration and its effects on health, reflection on the path leading to incarceration, suggestions for improving living conditions, and addressing health issues. The proposals from the “staff” group served as the basis for negotiations.
