Maternity Ward at Roubaix Hospital: Refocusing on the Individual Needs of Mothers and Newborns [Interview].
The approach centered on the needs of the mother and child is changing the attitude of the professional staff. It has been implemented at the Roubaix maternity ward based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “Baby-Friendly Hospitals” model. The staff do not adopt a dominant expert stance or a paternalistic relationship with the patients. The organization adapts: a sleeping newborn or mother is not woken up, and the father has a sofa bed so he can sleep in the room. Bathing, care... parents learn these skills by doing, not just by watching. No more nurseries—everything is designed so that the newborn and mother are never separated.
