Initiatives targeting prison staff and inmates.

The author presents an analysis of the approach taken by the Ille-et-Vilaine Departmental Health Education Committee over the course of four years of work with female inmates at the Rennes Women’s Correctional Facility. Two “health” projects were carried out; for the one on AIDS, the initiative focused on expressing the anxieties caused by incarceration and their physical effects, as well as on health-related beliefs and knowledge. For the one on addictions, work on eating behaviors first allowed for the expression of the suffering caused by isolation; and then fostered awareness of responsibility, usefulness, and tolerance, with a view toward reintegration. The approach involved establishing communication between female inmates and prison staff, whose educational role should be supported and developed (according to the author’s summary).
