The Health and Social Harms of Alcohol in France
In France, alcohol kills 41,000 people each year, accounting for 7% of deaths among those over 15, particularly among men. Cancer is the leading cause, followed by cardiovascular and digestive diseases. The harm is not only physical: substance use disorders play a role in early-onset dementia and are associated with anxiety and depression, increasing the risk of suicide. Combating these harms requires coordinated public policies at various levels.
