Attitudes and Practices of General Practitioners Regarding Hepatitis B Vaccination, France, 2009.
Introduction. In France, hepatitis B vaccination coverage among the populations targeted by vaccination guidelines (high-risk individuals, infants, children, and adolescents) remains insufficient. The objective of this survey is to assess and monitor changes in the opinions and practices of general practitioners (GPs) regarding hepatitis B vaccination, given their central role in prevention. Method. The survey was conducted by telephone and online between November 2008 and January 2009 among a sample of 2,083 GPs in private practice selected by simple random sampling. The results are compared with data from previous years. Results. The vast majority of GPs surveyed (88.3%) reported being vaccinated against hepatitis B. More than 9 out of 10 doctors (94.0%) said they were in favor of vaccination for at-risk adults, 78.7% for adolescents, and 68.0% for infants. The increase in the proportion of GPs stating they are very supportive of infant vaccination, which began in 1998, was particularly significant between 2003 and 2009 (+15 percentage points). More than one-third of GPs (36.2%) report offering the hexavalent vaccine “systematically” for infant vaccination, and 21.3% “often.” Nearly two-thirds of GPs offering the hexavalent vaccine feel that its reimbursement has helped improve hepatitis B vaccination coverage among their patients. Discussion. General practitioners’ attitudes toward infant vaccination are evolving favorably. This trend coincides with the reimbursement of the hexavalent vaccine and is accompanied by a significant increase in vaccination coverage among infants. The reduction in the number of injections and the simplification of the vaccination schedule offered by this combination vaccine are certainly among the key factors driving this improved uptake.
