Tobacco use and e-cigarette use among 17-year-olds in France, 2014.

Introduction: The latest round of the Escapad survey, conducted in March 2014, confirms the resurgence in smoking already observed in 2011, with one in three 17-year-olds (32.4%) reporting that they smoke daily. Furthermore, for the first time, it is possible to report the proportion of adolescents who use e-cigarettes: while half (53.3%) have already had the opportunity to try them, only 2.5% report vaping every day. Methods: The eighth round of the Escapad survey, conducted by the French Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT) during Defense and Citizenship Day, took place in March 2014 among 22,023 French adolescents aged 17. Results: In 2014, more than two-thirds of 17-year-olds (68.4%) reported having smoked at least one cigarette in their lifetime. This level of experimentation remained stable compared to 2011 and still below the level measured in the early 2000s (77.6%). Daily smoking, reported by 32.4% of 17-year-olds in 2014, continues the upward trend that began in 2011. With 11.3% of these adolescents reporting that they smoke more than 10 cigarettes per day, the proportion of heavy smokers has also remained stable since 2008. In contrast, the proportion of occasional smokers and daily smokers consuming fewer than 10 cigarettes per day has increased significantly. Finally, 1 in 6 adolescents has used a hookah, and 1 in 2 reports having tried an e-cigarette, while only 2.5% say they have used one daily in the past 30 days.
