An initial study conducted in early 1999 estimated the number and characteristics of smoking cessation clinics in France. As a result, 207 smoking cessation clinics were identified in France. To improve access and care for tobacco-dependent individuals wishing to quit smoking, the State Secretariat for Health and Disability sought to strengthen hospital tobacco cessation clinics in France; a grant of 26.2 million francs was thus allocated to hospitals. To assess the impact of the announced measures in the future, the hospital administration conducted a “one-week” hospital survey. The aim of this study was to determine the number of people who sought care at hospital tobacco cessation clinics and to assess the use of standard tools for evaluating addiction recommended by the 1998 consensus conference.
