Regional Comparison of Smoking and E-Cigarette Use in France in 2014
Introduction: Regional smoking prevalence data are essential for regional stakeholders to plan and evaluate their local tobacco prevention policies. This article presents indicators on tobacco use and e-cigarette use at the level of the new regions, based on data from the 2014 Health Barometer. Materials and Methods: The 2014 Health Barometer is a two-stage random telephone survey (household then individual) among those who own a mobile phone and/or a landline. The sample included a total of 15,635 individuals aged 15 to 75 in mainland France and 8,163 in the French overseas departments. Results and discussion: In mainland France, regional prevalence rates of daily smoking ranged from 23.6% in Île-de-France to 31.3% in the Grand-Est region. The differences observed between these two regions can be partly explained by socioeconomic factors. Regarding vaping (daily or occasional), prevalence rates ranged from 4.1% in the Pays de la Loire to 8.0% in Brittany. In the French overseas departments, smoking prevalence was significantly lower in Guadeloupe (12%), French Guiana (12%), and Martinique (15%), while the prevalence in Réunion (25%) was closer to that observed in mainland France. This analysis provides important indicators at the regional level, coinciding with the launch of the 2014–2019 National Tobacco Control Program.
